From Tree to Table

I specialize in live edge furniture from fallen trees and reclaimed logs. A live edge is created when the outside shape of the tree of retained. Incorporating a live edge preserves the tree’s character and is a physical reminder of the tree. Each slab is carefully selected for its unique character, and as the contour of the wood varies greatly from slab to slab each piece of furniture created is truly unique.

Reclaimed

No trees are felled just for the purpose of creating furniture. Trees are downed naturally either by storms or from a lack of water. I also work with ancients logs salvaged and retrieved from Florida’s waterways (see below). After retrieval the logs are bonded to prevent warping and then kiln dried. Most of the wood I work with is Redwood, Oak, Black Cherry, Long Leaf Pine and Bald Cypress procured from Florida.

Sunken Treasure

When Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513 he came across immense stands of Long Leaf Pine and Bald Cypress along the inland waterways and swamps. It took until the late 1700s for the ravenous timber merchants to start plundering the termite and wood beetle resistant trees. Since neither railroads nor roads were an option for transporting the wood, the giant trees were felled with a broad axe, dried for a year and then floated down the rivers in large banded trains. About ten percent of the logs would be cast away due to improper floating and left to sink to the bottom of the river. The absence of oxygen and tannic fresh water prevented the logs from rotting and they remained on the bottom of the Florida waterways for hundreds of years.

Recently due to clogging of the waterways, the state of Florida has issued limited permits to recover logs that have the broadax mark on their trunks. As not to create a destructive industry, the logs can only be removed by small boats and raised with hand-winches and no machinery is allowed for the retrieval. The logs have become very unique as they have taken on a variety of hues while slowly absorbing minerals and tannins from the water.

Creating a beautiful piece of furniture from these logs is a humbling experience as these ancient logs are seeped in history.

Fishing

When not creating live edge wood furniture I book fishing charters in Costa Rica, and offer guided sportfishing vacations. I was one of Costa Rica’s first sportfishing captains and chartered there for 30 years. I moved back up to the USA in 2003. You can visit my website at Warren Sellers Sportfishing.
